News at WCC

Dear Members and Friends of Windham Country Club,

By now everyone is aware of the tremendous devastation that took place over the weekend as a result of Hurricane Irene. The Town of Windham and the surrounding areas have suffered a great deal of damage and we are hopeful that all of our friends and neighbors will be able to recover from their losses and once again be able to enjoy life in the Windham that we love.

The Windham Country Club did not escape the storm unscathed. As many of you already know, the Club did suffer severe damage and, sadly, lost several of the golf holes on the front nine. The Batavia Kill, which wanders throughout the front nine holes of the golf course, overflowed its banks to epic proportions and caused most of the damage to our course and to our friends in town.

The losses that we incurred, for those of you who haven’t seen the destruction firsthand, include:

• The bank behind the 4th tee box caved in
• A torrent of water took away the equipment shed near the 4th tee box and with it almost all of the machinery used to care for the course including mowers, etc.
• The 4th hole was completely destroyed from tee to green
• The 5th hole received damage in the area of the green
• The 6th hole received damage to both the tee and green
• The bridge by the 6th and 7th holes was destroyed
• Much of the 7th hole, particularly the area from the 150 yard marker to the green, including the green, was totally destroyed
• The 8th hole tee boxes and the bridge were also lost
• A large crevasse running from South Street across the 10th fairway appeared due to mountain runoff

On a positive note, the clubhouse withstood the storm very well and was barely impacted by the weather.

As you can tell, the course and, in particular, the front nine holes were devastated. However, a tremendous amount of work has been done on the course since Monday and several area golf courses have offered use of their equipment so WCC can continue to be operational.

Therefore, the back nine will be open for play beginning Friday, with a few modifications. Work will continue into the fall as we assess the damage and plan for the future. We hope you will continue to support the Windham Country Club and ask for your patience, support and cooperation as we move through this difficult period. We look forward to seeing you over the holiday weekend or as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Windham Country Club
